Delay in 5.0.3 release
December 7th, 2006 by Philip
We were planning to release 5.0.3 by mid of december but things have changed, we have not yet started the validation. Had lot of bugs reported from our paid customer and we have no other option than to fix and add it to our release branch, abt 10 to 15 issues have been fixed this way, and this has contributed a major part in this delay. Right now for the next two days we’ll be concentrating on the blocker and critical issues assigned in 5.0.3 milestone. Planning the start the validation by early next week. Want the community to join hands with us for the validation. If possible we’ll have a validation build.

Personally, the more bugs that get fixed the better for me!
I would be more than happy to test if required.
Please make the difference against the other Open Source web software. Test and stabilize your product first, this is the only way to acquire and mantain new enterprise users and possible customers especially in Italy.
I really like The Open Source models , but every time I install new program or release I became very concerned about quality and critical bugs, so I have to preliminary test every new update before move in production and this is very time consuming and expensive.
So in my modest opinion (please don’t get me flamed!!!) is this the reason why many users in Italy drop the Open Source model and move back to M$ proprietary web products.
I read on the web that Linux is Fun, Open Source is Fun….O.K. well done but now is time to get the Fun and Professional mix pragmatically together.
Keep Going the nice Job ……
Ciao !! from Italy
Hi Mac!Yes, I do agree with you. The goal of v
tiger is to make sure that the impression of open source being of inferior quality be removed. vtiger also intends to be the standard in terms of the UI. I hope you will agree that the 5.0.0 release is of commercial grade.
As you see we are learning and have delayed the release schedule so that we can accomodate proper quality testing in the releases.
Let me personally assure you, vtiger has learnt from the mistakes and for us from now on, quality is paramount. So, you can expect deployable grade releases from now on from vtiger.
vtiger team is having a lot of fun developing the product and at the same time, we are learning too. We are committed to open source and we do understand that customers face a lot of hardships because we do not deliver quality.
Let me reiterate again, quality is paramount for us from now on and we will strive to provide world-class quality in open source.
Mac, when Richie was visiting us a couple of days ago we talked about the same issue.
From the customer point of view is is more important to have the existing features working (which is a hard job to do) than creating new features (which is probably more fun). Richie asured us that he is focussing on quality now but he also told us that vtiger needs the help of the community.
As more people testing the product, report bugs or provide fixes as faster the software will improve, that is clear. But we also found out when we talked to Richie that sometimes it is difficult for vtiger to understand a problem. A good example are the i18n issues. Only people who speak a non English language are able to realy understand the issues related to translations, language files, different grammar rules or character coding. Another example would be the data exchange with other applications.
Therefore, it seems to be paramount for the success of the product that the vtiger team gets support in terms of conceptual work that outlines architectural flaws and provides solution proposals. Richie seems to be very open for this.
