We've got AGAIN the same issue with naming. If the next release resolves many tickets, why is not 5.0.4?

By the way, 4 weeks for release alpha?, beta?, RC? It's been so long taking out an stable release. Are you sure this patch doesn't break anything? I know that pop3 access is a very demanded issue, but IMHO it fits better on a 5.1 rather than a 5.0.4.

And finaly, Are you sure you could respect the yimings you have planned. Last time you announced a 3-month release take nearly a year and a half.

I any case, good work kkep going.

PD. Rememeber of translators for 5.1, try to include some help on translatios, thanks.

The main reason to do it as a patch, instead of a release, is to minimize administrative hassle of downloading and installing a full release for existing customers. For new customers, it might make sense to have an integrated 5.0.4 release that is 5.0.3 + patch. We'll consider this after releasing the patch.

Next 4 weeks we will be doing 2 rounds of validation on the patch before releasing it as RC.

We are working on a fix for POP3 access and are hopeful that it will not impact other main features. We will make a final decision on including it in the patch after the 1st round of validation.

We are hopeful of meeting the timetable for the patch (by Oct 1st week).

You mean that it's not better doing a 5.0.4 release with two packets, one for upgrade and another one with full instalation and let the user decide wich one toinstall.

"We’ll consider this after releasing the patch."

I think you may consider it BEFORE releasing the patch, after the patch you can get the same release with different namings (5.0.3+patch & 5.0.4) or same naming to different releases (I asume that for new 5.0.4 you will add some new closed tickets to patched 5.0.3) none of them seems very logical

Please use the industry standard logical numbering, X.Y.Z

X = major version
Y = minor version
Z = bugfixes

It is SO confusing to have 5.0.3+patch. Why NOT 5.0.4?

For new customers it is confusing to have to download and then immediately install a patch, and for existing customers, the will have to apply the patch, so why not just ask them to upgrade instead? It's purely a naming thing, so why not keep it simple???!

I think releasing a patch is the right approach myself.

I would rather have a patch to install than a whole new install of vtiger.

6.0 Sounds like vtiger has listened to the community and is taking the CRM in the right direction, this is very positive news indeed.

"The patch will include support for UTF-8 (except in a couple of modules that still depend on a PDF library which doesn’t support UTF-8)". Are you guys serious ?! you are missing the point here.

@Rasomu : you sound a bit rude. What is good with logic is that different roads can be taken for same achievements.
@zultric : you sound rude, though i agree foreign characters in pdf are crucial for the whole project. Unfortunately, the pdf library used is just NOT UTF-8 compatible. Maybe Vtiger could use <a href="http://sourceforge.net/projects/tcpdf/" rel="nofollow">TCPDF</a>, which Joomla! now uses and that is Unicode enabled. I know this would make lot of new code as printing templates would need to be updated. Be they need to be anyway, don't they ?

Anyway, good to know about the roadmap!
And good luck in hunting down those POP3 bugs !!

So maybe not so much rewrite after all...

Dear Mato, I'm not trying to be rude, but I'm very sceptical with Vtigerteam announcements, that doesn't means I didn't admire the effort they put on their work.

The namming conventions is not the first time that is commented and IMHO is a MUST for, if you want that your community could understand what you are doing. Nick explains it very well.

I don't know if you remember what was 5.0.0 patch 1, patch 2... everyone with different issues and caracteristics working in different modules... It was more than a pain.

Now Vteam does things slightly different, much better, but I have my reserves on their way of doing things. I'm sorry, I'm a human being.

@Rasomu,@Nick: We have revised our plans to now release the patch also as a 5.0.4 integrated release. (Original post has been updated.)

Regarding the schedule, while we will try to meet our target date, because of unpredictable nature of software development as with anything else in life, we cannot guarantee it.

@mato: We are infact switching to TCPDF

1.- Congratulations, I wait that 5.0.4 RC for doing the translation.

2.- The schedule... I don't want to know at second when is going to be launch a new release, just knowing if it is realistic and can be acomplished (except natural dissasters :-P)

One question for the planned 5.* releases (not sure whether this is the right place to ask, thus "sorry" in advance if it's not): is it likely, that the newly released project management module from DifferentSolutions will continue to work with those releases, or will the framework change so significantly that we should better assume otherwise?

I have been testing the new release of vtiger 5.04.

I am very impressed with your documentation as I was expecting trouble. I believe as long as you read the install manual/requirements and setting, admins will have no problems installing, setting up and using this CRM product. Very nice. I will continue my testing.

I realize that the 5.1 release is postponed due to the amount of change and testing required for 5.04.

Can you update your target dates for the 5.1 release?

Thank you.

PS. I have been going to trac.vtiger.xxx as well but the 5.1 has not been updated in more than 6 months. I am thinking there is something terribly wrong.

Hi Vtiger team.

Is this a 5.1 release or a 5.0.5?
Does it include modularization?
Are you going to include a module for installing languages(as language pack wizard?

Are you sure 3 months is enough time for betas an RCs? rememember 5.0.4 just a few lines above.

Cheers

@rasomu,

We expect to release 5.1 in August/September timeframe. It will have feature enhancements and bug fixes. 5.1 will not have any architecture changes to support modularization. That will come in 6.0 release.

We haven't finalized a decision on including the language pack wizard in 5.1. Work has started on 5.1 release more than a month ago, and we are making good progress. We will have an update with more details in a few days time.

Hi Sreenivas,
When is the 5.1 release expected?
We need some of the features that are coming up in 5.1.

Btw, just curious - has vTiger development slowed down after Zoho launched its own CRM?
Hope thats not the case...

Thanks!

@AS,

We have not finalized the dates for 5.1. We have expanded the scope of 5.1 to include more enhancements. Until we do a code freeze and start validation, we will not be able to identify the probable release dates.

As you can see, we are getting more ambitious with vtiger and expanding its capabilities and only expect to increase the pace.

Sreenivas,
from 5.1, what I have seen so far, I like most the enhancements you do for already existing functions, like you did to customs lists. There is much room for such enhancements.

In my opinion the most important are enhancments for the communications to devices and applications outside the CRM. A seamless export and import of all kind data and synchronizing with other applications are at the current stage much more important than new features for handling of data within CRM.
For instance, the Plugins and Extenions should operate with Vista and Office 2007. The synchronisation of the Outlook calendar should include group related entries and not delete unsupported entries at Outlook.

@Balduin,

Thanks for the feedback. I agree that integration and extenssibility of vtiger is as critical as built-in functionality. We are making progress on the extensibility front, with the <a href="http://forge.vtiger.com/projects/vtlib/" rel="nofollow">vtlib library</a>. To support integration with other tools, we will be offering an enhanced API in 5.1

To my knowledge, the vtiger CRM Outlook and Office plugins already works on Office 2007. On Vista, prior to installing the plugins a configuration should be changed (UAC should be disabled from MSCONFIG -> TOOLS).

Kindly share more details about the Outlook enhancements you are looking for.
