Hi,

No doubt that this is a much anticipated release and a great effort from the team.
<strong>Kudos to them!</strong>

However, I think we and\or you should pause and think about the whole development process for vtiger.

How it's possible that 91% of the tickets are defects? and 71% are major, critical or blocker?
The prioritization is not very good or the development is leaving too many _critical_ issues open which has direct impact in the release dates and market acceptance.

Anyone shares this opinions?

Hi Luis,

Thank you for compliments.

All 91% of the defects are not directly related to 5.0.3 alone, it also includes issues that we came across during the validation round. This was due to changes made to core APIs.

Prasad

I think it was premature to release this version without the patch from at least 5.0.3. It's like saying "we're excited about our ongoing development and can't wait for <strong>new</strong> people to try our our latest achievements but for those of you who have been working with the program for a period of time now and have established production versions of the program - who have been working with it and providing ongoing valuable feedback - it's just not that important to us that we make the latest release easily available for you. We know you are going to wait around for us to get this together but we can's be so sure of a new audience.

If you don't treat the people who have been with you for the long term with proper respect I think you send a dangerous - to say nothing of insulting - message to the existing community.

Before releasing the patch we wanted to check its behavior. The patch will be made available soon, we apologize for the delay.

sammydeus, we are working with vtiger from the very beginning and I am <strong>not</strong> insulted. On the contrary, I appreciate the work the team has done and I am very satisfied with the service provided to the community and to me as a user who pays for additional services.

Of course I have also a whish list, probably as long as yours. But I recognize the fact that this is an Open Source project and I can build on it or find someone else to do it for me.

vtiger has been always fair to the community and got overloaded with whishes for bug fixing and enhancements. Many members of the community try to help and contribute.

Congratulations to the entire vTiger Team! Although we all may feel that things run a bit slower than we would like, there have been huge improvements on how to handle the development process by the vT team.

@Luis
91% of defects corrected, for me means 3 things:
- Testing was comprehensive enough to detect those bugs
- The proper priority was given to issues in developing the new version
- vTiger Team is 100% transparent about their work

I'm more concerned about other s/w releases that claim only feature enhancements and no bug fixes... like if it was possible for ANY software to be bug-free... only if they didn't look for them!

@Rui

no no no no

My comment was not intended to go in that direction!

I was wondering if there was a better way to develop vtiger than the current adopted strategy.

I know its perfectly normal to have bugs, errors and omissions however i do not think that having hundreds of bugs\error found late in the process normal!

As we can clearly see by the consecutive release postpones this way of working is not acceptable in the long run.

Maybe there should be a _bit_ more process and a _lot_ more automated testing... :)

Just my 2 cents people... do not throw the lions at me! :)

Luis - Agreed, and I believe architectural directions being considered for future releases will in fact address exactly your points. Like a few others here, we've spent quite a lot of time in the code base, and we know that once the product is moved to a modular architecture (to allow greater community contribution) the code base will undergo the transformation required to allow automated testing and greater simplification (less likelihood of dependent bugs arising).

vTiger team - Great work. Onward and upward!

Luis:

Thanks for the comments. We are in agreement about improving the development process and we have identified some specific areas:

1. Uniform policy to assign severity for bugs: I believe some bugs are not being assigned the right severity.
2. For 5.0.4 we got tempted to take on some minor feature enhancements during the validation phase (ex: UTF-8 support for PDFs) ..etc. This certainly is a cause for concern. This required additional rounds of validation. To some extent this is the nature of software development but in hind sight we could have saved some time with better planning.

5.0.4 has been a good step forward in terms of development model, in that vtiger community has been more involved in the release. We will learn from this exercise and will have much more collaborative development for future releases

Hi Balduin,

<blockquote>sammydeus, we are working with vtiger from the very beginning and I am not insulted. On the contrary, I appreciate the work the team has done and I am very satisfied with the service provided to the community and to me as a user who pays for additional services.</blockquote>

Please don't get me wrong. I didn't say that I felt insulted either and I have long appreciated the work of the development team and have tried to help out when my meager skills would allow me to.

The point I was trying to stress is that those users like you and I who have had a years long standing relationship with the program are the ones who are MOST excited to incorporate these new improvements into our production environments. I am merely voicing my frustration with being this close but not able to take this next step while those who arrived much later than we did have the opportunity to jump right in with the latest and the greatest of vTiger. I just wish that the entire package - including the patches - had been released at the same time. If the patches are that close to being released I don't see what the problem with waiting a few hours or days might have made to making a FULL and COMPLETE release of this wonderful product.

Again, I have to stress, this is just my own personal feeling on the matter and it is in no way a reflection of my overwhelmingly positive opinion on the hard work and dedication of the vTiger development team and users like yourself.

Congratulations for the excellent work carried through for the vtiger CRM development team. To each version considerable advances in the System are perceived, becoming more and more a real alternative front proprietors softwares.

I take advantage of to inform that the Brazilian Language Pack already meets in the download area of our project in <a href="http://forge.vtiger.com/projects/vtigerbr/" rel="nofollow">http://forge.vtiger.com/projects/vtigerbr/</a>.
First of all well done team & congratulations for this release.

I've just installed it but i am not sure if this is a bug or if it is a "feature" or if I have been dreaming.

In 5.0.3 I recall being able to setup more than one email account to be used in the webmail module (i.e. personal email account, personal email account 2 and group email account (i.e. info@company.com).

However in the new version I cannot find how to setup more than a single email account.

Am I dreaming? am i thinking of another CRM system or has this been ommited from this version.

Once again, congratulations and all the best for your new efforts for the next version.

Hi Jom,

Thank you for your appreciation.

Webmail can be configured with one email account by each user. This feature continues to be the same in vtiger 5.0.4

Hi Prassad,

thanks for the reply. I must have been thinking of the *other* CRM where you can have more than one email account on the webmail module.

Is there any way of doing this in vTiger? This is a very useful facility, specially where you have your own personal email account and you have to check a group email account (shared by various people) i.e. info@yourcompany[dot]com or sales@yourcompany[dot]com

are there any workarounds or plans to have this in the future?

Under test conditions, how many users / transactions / records this system an handle?

Thanks in advance

We have not undertaken benchmarking for the new version. We hope to take this up in the next few weeks.

Well done vTiger team!

I just did a cursory review of some Events after 504 conversion and noted the garbled characters were converted to legible text. I will say to <strong>take note of setting up your UTF-8 database properly</strong> as I did not do this right the first time so Unicode text conversion did not work.

The lag in the Calendar and the lag in linking of entities to one another is also fixed!

PostgreSQL support? As far as I can tell people have been asking for this for a while. Having used SQL databases for as long as they have been popular(1985 onwards) I find PostgreSQL does the expected more often that any other DB engine. MySQL has always been great, but with my background I gravitated towards PostgreSQL since the days of Postgres95. I know that I'm not alone in that choice.

What are the road blocks to creating rock solid PostgreSQL support for vtiger? Coding? Design? Political? If I can be the answer to any of these, I will try to make time in my busy schedule.

If the problem is a political one(which I highly doubt), then what issues would there be with a fork of vtiger, a fork of sugar?

Hi A.Person,

You can find the recent discussion on PostgreSQL support here:
http://lists.vtigercrm.com/pipermail/vtigercrm-developers/2007-November/002622.html

Jens, our community member, is focused on getting this support. I would appreciate if get in touch with him to provide more support.

It would be good to have a project on http://forge.vtiger.com for PostgreSQL support, which enables community to download and test work in progress.

Politics is something we don't like, we encourage more initiatives and collaboration.
