We are reaching the end of the development phase for 5.1.  Today, we have released our last WIP (work in progress) update with some important feature enhancements including the support for Service based businesses.

Services Model Support[Services Model.pdf]

5.1 includes the following features to enables businesses sell services and track service contracts.

  1. Inventory support for Non-stock items/Services
  2. Service contracts to let users track the progress, duration and work items of a service.

More new features in 5.1:

1. Layout Editor[Layout Editor.pdf]

Completely revamped and re-structured to allow admin to to add custom fields,delete custom fields,move fields from one block to another block,rearrange fields as well as related list in more information of modules. This also provides support for B2C model by enabling the option to set Account as non-mandatory field.

2. Vtiger Gmail Bookmarklet[Gmail Bookmarklet.pdf]

Provides basic integration with Gmail where-in mails from a gmail account can be added into vtiger.

3. Email Status Tracking[Email Status Tracking.pdf]

Added basic email tracking capability to vtiger, where-in all the emails sent out from vtiger will be tracked for information like, access count.

4. Reports module re-written[Reports Changes.pdf]

Reports are made generic as we can generate reports for newly added modules, now reports respect security settings. A user can set a report as public, private or share it among his groups or user’s role and subordinate users.

5. Tooltip Manager for ListView[Tooltip Manager.pdf]

Tooltip manager is an utility provided inside vtiger that gives you the ability to view detailed information about a record when you hover over it in the listview. Using tooltip manager, you can relate a field to multiple fields within a module and see them all in a tooltip (ballooned text), when you hover over that field. This means lesser trips to detailview and access to more data within the listview.

6. Account Hierarchy[Account Hierarchy.pdf]

Let’s you view the one-level higher up hierarchy and the complete lower level hierarchy through a Tree Structure.

7. Calendar Custom fields[Calendar Custom Fields.pdf]

This feature provides an UI to add user defined fields (custom fields) to calendar module.

8. Picklist Editor Revamped[Picklist Editor.pdf]

Picklist editor’s UI is revamped and global actions like add, edit and delete are added. An assign action is provided where admin can specify the picklist values for selected role(s).

9. Notebook

Vtiger Notebook is a nifty utility provided inside vtiger that gives you the ability to save little notes without requiring to create a record. You just click on the notebook, type in your content and click outside it; you are done. Your notes are saved in the notebook.

Enhanced Features:

1. Changes to Installation Process[Installation changes.pdf]

The installation process has been revamped and simplified. Its possible to migrate to 5.1 from the installation wizard.

2. Documents enhancedDocumentsModule.pdf ]

In Documents modules users can group the related Documents and place them under a folder,the empty folder will be hidden from the view.

3. Product bundles[ProductBundles.pdf]

Product bundles now support n to n  relationships where a product can be part of multiple-product bundles and product bundles can have multiple sub products. Inventory modules list sub-products of a product bundle and update the product quantity of all the sub-products and the bundle.

4. Eventing API

Events handlers can be bound to a module, this is useful when creating a custom module to keep track of event handlers created for that particular module.

Other Updates:

1. Duplicates merge revamped
2. Themes revamped
3. Settings page links moved to database
4. Vtlib upgraded to 2.1

In two weeks time, we plan to release the first Validation Build. It will signal the end of the development phase (i.e.,no new features development) and start of test and bug fixing phase.

    Love the changes really looking good, just 1 question, will the services be viewable in the customer portal like the products are?, and if so will they be independent from the products.

    i.e if i disable products from being visible in the customer portal, will this also disable the services tab?

    Firstly I want to Thank who working on developing 5.1!

    And I want to mention about migration. When I want to migrate from 5.04 to 5.1 they are all ok except from UTF-8 characters. Some characters migrated as “?”. I did see this problem when I restore my database without FOREIGN_KEY_CHECKS=1.
    Is there anybody migrate from 5.04 to 5.1 with UTF-8 characterset succesfully? (sorry my poor english)

    This is all very exciting. I think it would be great if the Vtiger team put out a roadmap. (ie. Validation build with a date, then testing for x number of weeks, then RC build for x number of weeks, then Final build, then an estimated first round of patchs and second round of patch of the software).

    My company is looking to use vTiger, but without any roadmap we cannot do anything for planning.

    Hey guys,

    Just wanted to add my 2 cents worth again. I have some clients that use services and I was telling them that vtiger is superior to Daylite (the nr 1 Mac OS CRM) and a uniquely developed database respectively. However, they keep asking me about the possibility to link services to each other just like the member of function in organizations. I don’t know if you plan on implementing something like that, but it might be an interesting feature.
    Also, in the contacts a field for an assistant could be a nice addition. I guess you could also do that with a couple of custom fields in 5.1 now. Great feature by the way!!!
    Once more congratulations to the vTiger team. This release is really amazing, I keep getting more and more impressed.

    Adding new fields (like member of in accounts) for any module is easy with vtlib today (which is part of 5.1 as well). You can achieve it by creating a new field of uitype 10.

    Just one thing, will it not be a good idea to link the Support Period [in Services] to the Customer Portal, in the sense that only if you have a valid support contract, you can access the portal [kb, faq or raising tickets].

    Keep up the great work, and if possible give some estimated dates for release or better still roadmap. so that people can plan.

    Is there any chance of having an option (checkbox or similar?) to turn off the echo of the sub components in a product bundle from listing under the main bundle product in documents, invoices etc?

    Most of the time listing the sub components is a good feature, but there may be occasions when it would be better to uncomplicate the output documents and just list the top bundle product…

    I have just read through all of the feature enhancements for 5.1 and have another added feature question for you!

    I know many of the users here have been looking for ability for addition of custom event types (such as ‘Personal’ and ‘Holiday’ as well as specific events for your own business model etc.) to extend the default ‘Meeting’ and ‘Call’ event types.

    I didnt see this is the 5.1 feature list - if it is not included as a feature yet is it possible to add it into the roadmap?

    Someone had disabled all the fields of Recurring Invoice Information block through Layout Editor, because of which the recurring information was not showing up in Sales Order. Hopefully, the information is visible now on the wip/demo server.

    what do you mean by ‘Child memeber accounts’? We have now provided a feature ‘Account Hierarchy’, where in you can view the hierarchy of the accounts (parent-child relationships between the accounts). Let me know if you are pointing to something else.

    Asha, I´ve found the hierarchy thing, It´s not too user friendly, You have to hover the more actions block to find it, but it´s there.
    After that I´ve tried to create a report to get data using that relationship but you can´t. if I wanna see reports for a mother account and it´s childs there´s no place (al least on sight) to ask for it.

    And what about the other things pointed(snapshots and blocking).

    Very excited about the inclusion of services - As a webhoster it’s a lot of work keeping track of annual hosting invoicing, domain renewals etc…. I am hoping this is going to be the answer to my prayers - especially if it will auto generate reminders/invoices…..

    You should be able to easily migrate from Vtiger 5.0.2 to 5.1.0. But you will have to wait for the release and do not try to migrate the data before that.

    The better way we suggest you to do is, first migrate your data to Vtiger 5.0.4 and then to 5.1.0.

    First of all, I have to say how impressed I am with the actual involvement of people and the fast responses by Asha and Prasad in particular.
    I am working on a couple of projects and have sent questions to other software companies without getting responses.
    Anyways, I have been testing vTiger 5.1 WIP and other solutions for one client in science. vTiger is definitely going to make the race, but in my study I came across some functionalities that seemed rather interesting.
    If it doesn’t fit the development of vTiger or has already been discussed, just disregard it.

    - Envelope printing / Label printing
    My client wants a functionality to print labels for events as well as envelopes to send out letters, invoices, and invitations to vTiger. I found that in a couple of other programs and it seemed quite useful.

    - 2nd, 3rd field for organization
    I have found in my experience that people work for more than one organization. With the vtlib I can create a number of custom fields, however, I haven’t quite figured out whether adding a second “account” field would irritate the system

    - change history
    Right now, you can track the changes a user makes. One of the programs I tested had the functionality to see the change history for Contacts and Accounts. It seems great for accidental data changes and also to see what has changed with a contact / account over some time. This was a really interesting aspect, because I hadn’t thought of it.

    export calendar events
    - Are there plans to add an iCal export functionality down the road?

    - project management
    I have rearranged some of the fields in the services tab. This is not what it’s meant for, but has a lot of the functionalities you need for project management. (Start time, end time, person responsible…). I saw that there is a project trying to integrate with dotproject. Just wondering if this is something on your list for the future.

    - User visible in contacts
    Since companies don’t / shouldn’t have anything to hide, it could be a good idea to have the user / organization also copied to the contacts / accounts section. This way, colleagues could see your conversations, events, meetings in case you get sick or go on vacation without specifically logging into your account. Maybe the user itself could set which information to show globally in his contact page.

    - Automatic county selection if state is selected (also add +1 to phone nr.)
    The functionality of automatic selections was basically just dependent drop down lists. However, when entering a couple of contacts, I started appreciating this. Continent - Country - State - County

    - Event overview
    I think one of the steps of going into detail view less has been taken with the tooltip manager. I’ve also come across the functionality that lists the first paragraph of the events in a form. That seemed very good when browsing conversations with somebody. Going back and forth to detail view is hard if you are trying to get a quick idea of the last conversations.

    Alright, I hope one or the other suggestion was helpful. I have some other things in mind that I will write extensions for once I get a moment.
    Altogether, 5.1 already seems to be luxury class for CRM, you guys did a fantastic job.

    I “svn checkout” the directory from the link from the 17th? Copied all over to web directory needed, ran through install. (no problems)

    I don’t see the changes for service or the directory for customer portal although the contact form has the checkbox.

    Can someone repost the correct link or a link to a faq/post that will help me be sure I get all of the directories and extensions?

    Any advise is appreciated, new to vtiger WIP.

    I have now installed vTiger 5.1 for testing and have encountered two issues.
    - when entering a tooltip for the e-mail mudule i.e. hover over subject to view description I get the following message:
    Fatal error: Cannot use object of type WebServiceError as array in /home/kothe/public_html/vtigercrm/include/utils/TooltipUtils.php on line 227

    - two is the webmail module. I have gotten it to work with Thunderbird partially, but my clients have told me that they don’t want to work with Thunderbird. In the webmail, when qualifying an e-mail
    a.) is there a way to manually select the contact to link to? (e.g. reply from different e-mails?)
    b.) no date is recorded of the message
    c.) could it possibly ask before creating a new contact?
    d.) first and last name in last name field - maybe popup to edit this first?

    Alright, I know you are in the process of finalizing 5.1 and understand that there is probably not much work pending on the E-mail.
    I am happy to program some of functions as well, it just doesn’t seem that this could be in the form of an extension.

    Please let me know if there is anything we can do about this. Maybe also shoot me a quick e-mail.

    Migrating problem with UTF8.
    Hi, When I try to migrate from 5.04 to 5.1 my all values with UTF8 characters migrated as “?”. A few code search I add a line to “include/db_backup/backup.php near line 51″
    mysql_query( "SET NAMES 'utf8' " );
    I think backup.php script doesnt deal with whether or not old database with UTF8 support.
    And also a second point I have a problem with ini_set value in migrate.php about line 214. It is a small value for my database 32M. After increase this to 128M my problem solved.

    Picklist Editor isn’t working properly. Selecting value from “Select module” picklist doesn’t work.

    Error is at PickList.tpl at lines 54 and 56. Instead {$module} you should use {$modulelabel} I think.

    I do add a lot of products by importing from CSV, it would be great to get more headers to choose from.

    Also, can you guys develop creating an invoice from a trouble ticket? That would make it a perfect solution for me!

    Great work on vTiger 5.1. I am quite a regular follower of vTiger and have blogged about it as well. However, I am surprised that one of the key function of the CRM is still missing.

    Module Based Search (List Searching)

    The usual design has this search facility just over the list of any module such as leads, potential, etc. This helps you to search the list regardless in whatever way you desire. The Filter module does achieve this in some way, but not always.

    For eg: I have a lead database of 1,00,000. The search facility as it gives me search results of enteries, not list. I want to see the list of leads which have been matured in pin code 400031. For that, I need to unnecessary need to edit/create a filter for it. Now, immediately after that, I want to get a list of clients who’s source is Word of Mouth and based in ‘Andhra Pradesh’. Again, I have to create/edit a filter.

    Filter has its own advantage for allowing customized viewing. However, a Module based search is highly required. I will provide you a graphical representation of the same mentioned above for an easy understanding.

    Just looked at the latest demo of vtiger and I must say I am very impressed.

    One of the things that particularly interests me is the studio and once again this is a huge improvement. However and isn’t there always a however, a couple of comments:

    1. To balance things up in a block it might be a good idea to have a filler field so that a field can be right justified for logical appearance i.e. phone number, fax number and mobile number all over to the right.

    2. The second comment could be a bug or just that I don’t understand completely how it all works. On the Leads page I moved a number of fields which I felt had more to do with description down to the description block. They don’t show! Nor do they show in their original Leads Block. I’m sorry if I broken it for you.

    I’ve just tried the new Service module and I face a little problem which I hope is easy to modify. When you create Quotes/SO/Invoice, there is no way to remove the default product line and so, it’s not possible to create Quote, SO or Invoice with only services.
    Is this limitation easy to modify?

    Problem then adding products to pricebook.
    For example: you have 3 products, and you add first product to PB. But then you try to add other two products, their names are corrupt. Problem is in AddProductsToPriceBook.php . You eliminate already added products and create a new array “$new_prod_array[]”, but names you take from “$list_results” (without elimination). So 2nd product takes name of 1st, 3rd of 2nd.

    I fixed it in such way:

    1. Created new array. Added after line 136:
    $new_name_array=array();

    2. added extra line (created new array) after line 142:
    $new_name_array[] = $adb->query_result($list_result,$i,”productname”);

    3. changed the way how product names are retrieved. used new created array. changed line 160 from:
    $list_body .= ”.$adb->query_result($list_result,$i,”productname”).”;
    to
    $list_body .= ”.$new_name_array[$i].”;

    Inorder to create a product bundle kindly follow the steps given below.

    1. Create a product which you want to make as bundle or you can use an existing product as bundle where the existing product shouldnt be a sub product(i.e in related list the parent products list should be empty)

    2. Go to More Information tab -> Product Bundles

    3. Here you can add a sub product by clicking on “Add Product” or you can add existing products as sub products by clicking “Select Products” where existing products cannot be a bundle.

    4. As you add products to product bundles list in more information tab, Your product can be called as a bundle.

    I think procedure then adding products to pricebook isn’t finished.
    Then adding product, product list is grouped by crmid. It would be useful if products were ordered by product name. I can see, that developer tried to do that, but didn’t finish it. No $order_by value set.
    At file AddProductsToPriceBook.php at line 70 I added:

    the new version looks great, i have been playing with the recuring invoices, i have made a s/o enabled recuring, set it to daily but the invoive is never created, is this feature not enabled on the test server,

    Today I spent some time to get familiar with the new Mail Scanner function. It is still buggy but I got most of the functions to work. What I like most is its capability to exclude IMAP folders from being concidered while scanning. This would be, by the way, also a useful function for the standard webmail. I also like the filter function and its related actions. However, at least at my installation I never got a visual sign that, after a manual scan, some ticket entries had been created.

    1. Is there a possibility of having the mailadress automaticly entered when the mailing window opens?

    2. Is there a possibility of assigning a standard email template for quotes and for invoices that comes up in the mail-window?

    3. Is it possible to have placeholders in the templates where the name is automaticly inserted?

    4. If I send an email like this. Is it saved in the history of the account with attachement and so on?

    Hi All

    when i create an invoice for an account, that contains any parts, these parts are not shown up in the “more information” tab of that account, the same is true for adding a service to an invoice, everything else is added to the more information tab correctly.

    is this an over site or a bug, and if so will it be resolved before 5.1 is released, we use navicat to connect to our database to create detailed reports that we can’t create natively within the software.

    is it an issue with how the data is related in the database i.e products and services not showing up in the “more information tab” of the account when they are added to an invoice, or is it a bug in the system that’s not passing this information from the database.

    Hello and thank you for great CRM system.

    I have few suggestion about some improvements in system:

    1. Default columns for related lists are hardcoded in module class files
    Proposition: Columns in related lists could base on default view from custom view or could be specified like field in tooltip manager.

    2. Similar is in popup window - columns and search criteria are hardcoded in module class file.

    3. Related lists could be sorted and paged with AJAX like in standard list view.

    I realize that I might be really late in this comment. And I admit I haven’t kept track of 5.1 as much as I should have. For my Service based business 5.1 is really looking good! But, I still have a nagging BIG issue that is still not there yet. We need some kind of Scheduling system to set calendars for service / sales people. I realize that there is the settings to “Share” my calendar with others, but, in my version 5.03 it seems to work sometimes and then not. This is frustrating for the owner of the company. It would also be helpful if the Calendar would actually block out the time of the event in the visual portion of the calendar.

    WORKING “PROJECTS” MODULE exists as a third party module made by german guys (vtiger.de), please look at the following link . Unfortunately, they say it will work only with 5.0.4 at this moment:-(

    As Project Management is at this moment probably the biggest missing vTiger feature, I have important question to vTiger Team: is it possible to include tis module in 5.1.x line and immediately start working together with German programmers to improve this module?

    I’m not sure if the bug fixing phase has already started and if this is the rights place to report on the bugs for 5.1. but I’ll try since this functionality is important for us.

    It is not possible to add custom field to Tasks in the Calendar. The functionality works correctly for Events.

    You can add custom field for To dos for that you have to go to Module Manager>Calendar > Custom Field Settings

    There you can find two radio Buttons(Events and Task) By default the Events Radio Button will be selected,so every time you are creating a custom field it is getting created for Events,so please choose “task” radio Button before clicking on new Customfield Button if you want to create custom field for task not for Events.

    And if you want to report issues regarding vtiger 5.1.0,you can do it By going in to trac.vtiger.com.but to have access to it please send a request to info@vtiger.com.

    I basically want to remove the last page , etc….

    Hi, I’m running a service-based company and want to put only services on my invoice. The standard invoice shows a product field which you are obliged to fill in but I don’t offer any products. I can add a service but I can’t delete or move the empty productfield untill it’s filled.

    Moving the empty productfield works in IE6 but not in FF 3.5.
